Successful Student Orientation

11/24/2013

23 September marked the completion date for the ten week Orientation Course. Since online learning is such a rare opportunity for students in Kenya, we've spent the last ten weeks introducing our twenty-four students to several new concepts. The focus of the orientation was learning the workflow for receiving and turning in assignments and collaborating with classmates in virtual spaces.

The course was an overwhelming success and helped administration and students work out several issues before the actual start of academic courses in January. Read the report (below the photo) from Paul Oduor, Director of Kenya Operations for HOPE School.

"For us to walk, we need to learn how to stand. The orientation course to the HOPE School of Leadership marks the standing point. The effort and sacrifice the instructors, teachers’ assistants and students are putting is so awesome. We have already gone thorough familiarization and interaction through the Canvas dashboard and the students have proven that they are now equipped and ready to walk the talk.

The students incorporating online studies into their already busy schedules seemed almost impossible but with their thirst for knowledge and personal growth, we have seen tremendous flexibility and we are grateful.

For me it has been a great experience making over twenty new friends within two months and still counting. I have had a chance to meet new people and widen my scope of influence, easily fitting in with them joining, some of them in their places of work and adding to my skills as they involve me most often. On top of that, sharing what I know with them as they do the same. It’s a learning process that we all have embraced. I am really humbled and grateful I can’t wait to learn more and apply being guided by our pilot verse - Psalm 25:5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long."

Our students have shared back overwhelmingly positive feedback at all stages of the ten week Orientation course. Of course, there's always things we'll be looking to improve as we move forward, but we've included some of the high points below...

"The course gave me time to read and understand the questions and do my assignments. The course was simple and straight forward to follow and understand. The instructors we helpful every time I needed help/assistance in understanding any issue in relation to the course."

- Ruth Otieno

"It has prepared me for the actual online course to come in January 2014. It has added to my relationship book a couple of legitimate, considerate, loving and resourceful friends in my network."

- James Ooko

"Life is a learning experience and I am honored to study at hope school of leadership. I know the knowledge we get will be able to transform our society through our place of work and the people surrounding us. So let us be positive and work hard. I have been pleased with this orientation course. It has given me insight and challenged my mind."

- Jane Kiama

"Don't worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don't even try.  God always make us meet the people we're suppose to when the time is just right. I thank God for this wonderful team of students. iI is my prayer that we shall learn and grow daily in His word. Everything is possible with Him. Lets always have faith in Him."

- Stephen Owino

"It is a once in a lifetime opportunity being chosen to be in this class. To my fellow classmates, its a blessing getting a chance to learn new things with new people and getting this chance to expand my view on things and learning new ways of doing things.

My greatest hope in this school is achieving the set goal; completion of the course with good grades. My prayer to all is that God will keep us together in all that we do and guide us through all the activities, classes and assignments to give us knowledge."

- Robin Ndunda

"The race of success has no limit or boundaries. It has only a starting point and this is where it begins. Lets all aim high because the sky is the limit."

- James Njuguna
